Most parents and professionals in baby care occupations have experienced the heavy work with pushing the baby carriage, in particular in up-hill in locations, during long walks and with more than one child in the carriage.
A Swedish SME has developed an electrical motor drive for twin baby carriages so that the effort for the parent to move the carriage is reduced. The motor drive operates on the front wheel pairs and the speed is controlled with a handle that is conveniently placed on the carriage. For safety reasons, the motor is shut off when the handle is left free. In downhill walk the motor functions as a brake, thus assisting the parent in maintaining a convenient and safe movement.
The battery capacity allows for at least 3 hours use. The battery is rechargeable from any electrical mains outlet. The carriage is provided with a safety contact that can be attached to the parents arm. The wheels are air-inflated for best possible comfort. The electrical motor drive can be disconnected with a simple operation if the user prefers to move the carriage without motor assistance.
Prototypes of the new baby carriage are under evaluation in field tests. The Swedish SME is looking for partners for commercial development, marketing or licensing.
